Horizon Bank Awards $3,000 to Community Action House

Holland, MI — Community Action House (CAH) is pleased to announce a $3,000 donation from Horizon Bank of Holland to its COVID-19 Emergency Response Fund.

“We felt it imperative to help the Holland community during this time and ensure that community members directly affected by this virus have basics and essentials. Community Action House is well equipped to provide critical food, clothing, and shelter to those in need,” stated Matt Hamm, Market President of Holland.

Community Action House has seen food needs increase substantially, and made significant adjustments to protect the health of guests, volunteers, supporters, and staff. That includes developing a curbside food box pickup procedure, increasing the amount of groceries provided at each visit, and over an eight-fold increase in weekly food purchases to keep up with demand. Additionally, CAH adjusted its Street Outreach services to better support our houseless neighbors, and Foreclosure Intervention efforts have been modified and stepped up to support homeowners facing sudden challenges.

“Since the start of COVID-19 Emergency Operations on March 16, we've provided over 92,500 meals worth of groceries to over 3,350 people in need. Beyond food assistance, we’ve continued to be a strong network of support for other critical needs, including efforts in Foreclosure Intervention. This gift helps us meet a surge in demand and sustain our best efforts to help our neighbors when they need it most,” said Scott Rumpsa, Executive Director of Community Action House.

For anyone needing food support right now, curbside pickup at their 14th Street Food Pantry can be scheduled by calling Community Action House at 616.392.2368. Additional services are detailed at www.communityactionhouse.org.

Businesses, churches, and countless individuals are each playing a critical role in helping sustain the essential services so many more people need in these challenging times. Hundreds of area families have joined the #stayhomefighthunger campaign and are packing family food boxes at home, others are generously supporting increased service through generous financial donations, and still others are volunteering on-site to ensure groceries are packed and meals prepared for our neighbors in need.

About Community Action House
Founded in 1969, Community Action House serves our most vulnerable neighbors right here on the lakeshore. Our founders sought to organize a collective response of individuals, churches, and businesses working together to provide critical resources in a time of need, as well as assistance achieving mobility from poverty. We remain a community institution - where folks of all perspectives come together to create and sustain a community of support and opportunity for our most vulnerable neighbors. We focus our efforts in three interdependent areas: Food Access, Resource Connection, and Financial Wellness, and pride ourselves in being a place where people can come to us for the food they need right now, but can leave with a plan for a brighter future, and a partner in that journey. Our emergency response to COVID is currently emphasizing providing increased food assistance via modified delivery at our Food Pantry and Community Kitchen, deploying our Street Outreach team to assist our houseless neighbors, and providing Foreclosure Intervention services.
