Boys & Girls Clubs of La Porte County Receives $10,000 Sponsorship from Horizon Bank

Michigan City, IN: As the COVID-19 crisis continues, Boys & Girls Clubs of La Porte County (BGCLPC) remains committed to serving kids and families in a world that looks dramatically different than it used to. The organization proudly announces receipt of a $10,000 donation from Horizon Bank in support of its efforts.

“Since March, we have been adapting our programming as needed to ensure safety and meet new needs,” says Michelle Shirk, BGCLPC Chief Executive Officer. “However, modifications like extended Club hours, decreased staff/Club member ratios and enhanced sanitization protocols bring increased costs. This generous gift from Horizon Bank will help ensure our continued ability to offer critical services to our community’s youth.”

Through a partnership with Michigan City Area Schools, BGCLPC is currently operating special daytime Clubs at Pine and Springfield Elementary Schools, in addition to its Charles R. Westcott Club at 321 Detroit Street. Club members in grades K-8 enjoy online learning support, fun activities and healthy meals. There is no charge to attend this program, and demand has been high. BGCLPC currently has a waiting list of more than 100 children, and is actively working to safely add capacity at all three Clubs.

“Horizon is proud to sponsor such a worthy organization and we knew that supporting the Boys and Girls Club during these challenging times was imperative to help them continue to provide online learning assistance, support for our local school programs, food and youth programs and services. They are doing an excellent job navigating the pandemic and safely taking care of families and children in LaPorte County,” stated Craig Dwight, Chairman and CEO.

So far, program participants have managed to balance virtual learning, Club activities and BGCLPC safety procedures with relative ease. “Our Club members are smart, resilient and have great futures ahead of them,” says Shirk. “We are delighted to have them learning, getting active and making new friends at our Clubs again.
