Our community impact and support.

Being involved and giving back is more than just the right thing to do. It’s the best way we know to understand the needs of both our customers and community members. So it’s only natural that we would encourage our Advisors to seek local volunteer opportunities. Inspiring them to get involved in their individual passions and take on leadership positions in the community simply dovetails with our approach to customer service.

Horizon Bank and Neighbor by Neighbor Award Federal Home Loan Bank Grants to Harbor Country Residents

Union Pier MI – Neighbor by Neighbor teamed up with Horizon Bank to help two households in New Buffalo and New Troy receive grants totaling $14,685 to complete major home repairs through the The Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis (FHLBank of Indianapolis).

The FHLBank of Indianapolis provides loans in the State of Michigan through the Neighborhood Impact Program (NIP) and the Accessibility Modification Program (AMP). Horizon Bank is one of the participating institutions processing grant applications for each of these programs. The first grant, from the NIP, assists low-income homeowners with household repairs such as roofs, siding, windows and HVAC. The second grant, from the AMP, helps low-income elderly and people with disabilities to adapt their homes to be easier to navigate with projects like ramps, widened doorways, wheelchair accessible showers and grab bars. The goal is to allow them to safely remain in their current homes.

Applications are accepted annually in late spring and require a significant amount of documentation. For home repairs, two estimates from reputable contractors are necessary, and homeowners must show that they are current on their mortgage and taxes as well as provide proof of income. One grant recipient will be able to replace their furnace and air conditioner, and the other recipient will have a new roof installed plus a new front door.

Horizon Bank and Neighbor by Neighbor partnered to obtain these grants and plan to continue collaborating in the years ahead.  The goal is to improve Harbor Country one home and one neighborhood at a time.

“Horizon Bank firmly believes in safe and affordable housing for everyone and remains committed to improving our neighborhoods, and reinvesting in the communities we serve,” stated Lewis Scott, Vice President and Senior Community Development Officer Horizon Bank.

Local residents who wish to be considered for the 2022 Federal Home Loan Bank grant cycle can learn more about the programs at:  https://www.fhlbi.com/products-services/community-investment-and-housing.
